Easter April 2018 Camp in Yalgoo - By Krista Reynen
Well I’d say our August Gold camp was a success if 32 out of 40 people found gold!!
Most members arrived on the Saturday and we were really excited to hear some of the early arrivers had already got a few small nuggets! Everyone set up their camps and gathered for happy hour where Presidential stand-in Egon welcomed everyone and gave us the run down on where we were allowed to go etc. Gerrit and I started a little campfire of our own and invited new members Ter Ence and Jiang to join us as. We were discussing how the outback wasn’t really as scary as the horror movie Wolf Creek made it look but better off to not accept water from strangers just in case…. There was an awkward silence as they peered into their coffee mugs at the hot water we had just given them and we quickly assured them we weren’t serial killers!
Sunday morning was my first day of detecting with the SDC 2300 I rented from Reeds Prospecting and the helpful Angelo had a long line of ducklings following him to an area he had found gold in the previous day. Many thanks for sharing the info and helping so many members find gold, mate!
All I wanted was to find one piece of gold and you cannot imagine my extreme (LOUD) excitement when I found 3 little gold nuggets that first day! Most were close to a pile of waste by an old mine shaft and really tiny, I think I dug about 40 teeny tiny bits of metal wire on that day as well.
The ground was interesting, lots of rocks to look at but very tiring to detect over because of all the loose rocks to swing your detector amongst and stumble over… Quite a few members as well as I found some quartz crystals which was an extra bonus, my first crystals!
I was slightly amused by an interestingly shaped rock on our daily drive to our prospecting leases, as well as a slightly misspelt sign. The weather was amazing in the days, we actually got down to 2.3 degrees one night though! Towards the end of the week the wind got incredibly strong, I’m amazed my Aldi toilet tent remained standing and I’m sure there were a few things lost forever to the bush…
Many congratulations to everyone who found gold, particularly those big bits over 10 grams. There’s nothing better than getting to happy hour to see everyone clustered together admiring those weighty golden nuggets! Best of luck to those who didn’t get any this time, hopefully you still had a great time and learnt/practised your skills for the future.
Big thanks to Egon and Paul for setting up the bags and to everyone else who helped organise this trip, it sounds like everyone had an amazing time. I like that our little club is so friendly and helpful and willing to share their knowledge and even gold locations with everyone. Thumbs up!
