West Coast Metal Detector Club

Club Info

The principal aim of the Club is to encourage metal detecting as a recreation, allowing any and all age groups to experience the enjoyment that can come from such activities.
Club membership is open to anyone with an interest in Club activities or wishing to develop their knowledge and expertise in metal detecting.  Membership is not restricted to owners of metal detectors, or to owners of any particular brand.  At this time, as Perth's only dedicated metal detector club, we welcome your interest.
Club Activities include:
Club Meetings - are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, except December, commencing at 7.30pm at the Western Australian Lapidary and Rockhunting Club Inc. 31-35 Gladstone Road, Rivervale.  Each month we endeavour to have a guest speaker on subjects related in some way to metal detecting. There is a monthly award for “Gold”, “Coin” and “Find” of the month, and we break for refreshments mid evening. This is a good time to speak with “experienced” detector operators and gain valuable advice/assistance.
Club Field Days - are held a few times throughout the year. We may visit historical sites, campsites, beaches etc. We may hold a workshop to help members get the most of their machine by sharing knowledge, using their detector under supervision, discussion and demonstration.

Treasure Hunt weekends - are held a few times generally each year. After an overnight camp, treasure hunts are held with prizes awarded.
Annual Prospecting Trip's - to the goldfields are held each Easter.  This is our main trip where members provide their own camping style accommodation, food, cooking arrangements etc. Apart from prospecting, treasure hunt, campfires, competitions and other activities are organised. This is as much a social event as metal detecting. We usually have a further Trip later in the year which is more casual and lower key.

Other Information

Newcomers:
You are welcome to come along to one of our field days, where you may be able to borrow a metal detector and be shown the basics of its use and experience its operation. There is no obligation or cost involved, just enjoy.

Miner's Right:
If you intend prospecting for gold anywhere in Western Australia you will need to obtain a “Miners Right” (current cost - $30.00) from the Department of Mines and Petroleum. Click HERE for more information,
or visit any Mining Registrars Office. The department's website also offers lots of information about the Mining Act and what you need to be aware of and how it applies to you and your prospecting plans. Fortunately we are not as restricted in WA as some other states and you will find club members are always willing to provide guidance should you have any queries.

Ethics:
As an incorporated Club, and consequently a responsible body, we cannot and do not enter any ground for metal detecting without the appropriate authority. As a member of this Club, we would expect you to show the same degree of respect and responsibility before entering upon any ground owned or controlled by other people or organisations.

Sharing is Caring:
If during the course of your own activities you become aware of potentially worthwhile ground, and permission can be obtained for a field day or a Camp, the Club Committee would like to hear from you. WA has a lot of detectable sites far from Perth, but local sites are fewer and fewer, so any we haven’t heard about yet would be welcome.
As mentioned we hold treasure hunts during the year, and only “treasure hunt” type detectors are permitted as they do not interfere with other detectors in close proximity, whereas the SD and GP/GPX “pulse induction” type detectors can damage other detectors within close proximity.

Get Involved!
In joining the Club we hope you will participate in Club activities and so gain knowledge and satisfaction from the use of your metal detector.  It is also hoped that as you learn you will pass on your knowledge and expertise to newer members and also be prepared to lend a hand at field days and camps where necessary.  The Club is only as good as its members and we hope you will enjoy the camaraderie, make new friends and contribute to the success of the West Coast Metal Detector Club Inc.
