Target refers to what the metal detector has found within a pre-set discrimination range, or to put it more bluntly, the item you may be looking for. Most modern detectors today have an 'accept' or 'reject' target button, this is used in conjunction with the display from the discrimination range and the operator decides if they want to dig it up or have the detector ignore it.
